Grey cements position as No1 car colour

Grey has cemented its position as the UK’s most popular new car colour in 2019, after hitting top spot for the first time in 2018.

The latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders show that the number of grey cars registered rose by 5.3% last year to 521,273. More than one in five (22.6%) new cars sold were painted grey.

Grey was consistently the favourite choice across the UK, apart from in Scotland and the Channel Islands, where white was the preferred hue. Among the least popular colours were maroon, cream and pink, which together accounted for under 1% of all registrations.

Black and white completed the UK’s top three, which meant that 60.7% of all new cars joining British roads in 2019 were shades of monochrome. Silver, which had been in the top three 16 times in the last two decades, posted its lowest number of registrations for 20 years. Only grey and turquoise actually increased their numbers during the 12-month period.
