Edinburgh is cheapest for running a car

At £1,721 a year, Edinburgh is the cheapest place to run a car in the UK and Aberdeen is the third cheapest.

According to a survey by Carwow, the five least expensive places are:

  • Edinburgh – £1,721 a year
  • St Davids – £1,722 a year
  • Aberdeen – £1,774 a year
  • Darlington – £1,802 a year
  • Cardiff – £1,820 a year

In contrast, the most expensive city is Manchester at £2,275, while the rest of the top five are all in the West Midlands – Dudley, Walsall, Coventry and Birmingham. The national average figure is estimated by Carwow to be £1,944.31 and includes fuel, insurance and maintenance.

“Our research has highlighted the variations in the price of everything, from insurance to fuel to services,” Alex Rose of Carwow said. “Of course, this has an impact on the cars drivers are choosing to buy, depending on where they live.”

It has also emerged that Scottish drivers are the most cautious behind the wheel. A poll of 2,000 motorists by Vantage Leasing found that drivers in Wales have picked up more speeding tickets than anyone else in the country (45%) and Scottish drivers the least. Similarly, drivers in Northern Ireland are the most likely to have been involved in an incident at some point (60%), and Scottish drivers the least (under 50%).
